GETTING IT WRITE

20th January - 11 a.m.
3rd February - 1 p.m.

Jacqueline Cook

Adults

This seminar will take a detailed look at how to approach Paper 2 of the Cambridge exams. What is this Writing paper designed to test? What are the 5 main areas of criteria looked at by Cambridge examiners and how are our students’ writing actually marked? The answers to these questions will give you greater insight into how to approach your writing lessons and work on improving the quality of what your students actually produce. We will be looking at real student samples and assessing them ourselves so as to standardise how we mark our students’ writing. If you have an exam class, this seminar is highly recommended as our Hyland mocks are coming up in February.

Andrea Littlewood

As teachers we aim to keep our children engaged and motivated with a variety of tasks that cater for their learning styles. In this session we'll be looking at ways in which music, mime and movement can help us achieve our aims and maximise participation whether we're dealing with skills work, language presentations, pronunciation activities or classroom management.

COURSEBOOK FUN

17th February -
1 p.m.

Helena Kennedy

Do you feel like you’re always giving students the answers? Have you ever looked at your board in horror? Do you find your students constantly feedback to you? If the answer to these questions is yes, then this practical session is for you! We’ll be looking at a number of different ways to vary feedback, deal with correction and make the most of the board.

EVALUATING & ADAPTING YOUR COURSEBOOK

24th February - 11 a.m.
2nd March - 1 p.m.

Chloe Dennis

Adults

This seminar is an opportunity to think about how we approach planning lessons using our coursebooks. It will focus on evaluating the usefulness (or otherwise) of coursebook materials and look at ways to exploit and adapt what we find in order to make it more relevant for our students and teaching context. The seminar will be based around some of the more common grammar points and books used in Hyland but will include ideas which can hopefully be applied to any coursebook.

SAVING LIVES THROUGH ENGLISH

10th February - 1 p.m.
17th February - 11 a.m.

Terena Fraser

Secondary & Adults

With more focus being put on CLIL in the ESL classroom, teachers are faced with having to become experts in the world around them. As the subject of ¨Health¨ has been appearing more frequently in course books, why not take the students even further and teach them how to save lives? This workshop focuses on addressing the topic of First Aid, raising awareness about why it is so important to know and focuses on key methods for incorporating this into the classroom. It is especially designed for students aged 12- Adults with a twist on how to implement it into an even younger age group.

STORYTIME

16th March - 1 p.m.
23rd March - 11 a.m.

Andrea Littlewood

Infants & Lower Primary

Children love a good story, whether it’s in their course books or a book from the shelf. The art of story telling might begin with choosing the right book but there is so much more to consider when it comes to making the most of the experience. This session will look at staging, lead-in and follow-up suggestions together with practical ideas to encourage teachers and children to integrate storytelling successfully in the classroom. We’ll also take a brief look at what children can access at home (their course book CD/DVDs and story web sites ) to share their learning with parents.

HOW DO YOU LEARN? HOW DO YOU TEACH?

16th March - 11 a.m.
23rd March - 1 p.m.

Andrea Sweeney

Adults

What type of learner are you? How does this affect the way you teach? Does your teaching style allow for your students’ different learning styles? This session aims to raise awareness of the different ways people learn so that we, as teachers, are better able to cater for all our students as well as add greater variety to our classes.

The teaching practice and feedback I received during the past month was valuable - now that I feel prepared I'm even more excited to teach in the 'real world'.
