Hyland at TESOL Spain 2008
9 Hyland trainers gave talks at the XXXI TESOL Spain conference in Madrid from 7th to 9th March 2008.
All talks were extremely well-received. For those of you who weren't able to attend, you can find details of the talks and the accompanying handouts below.
Teacher Reflections – Steps Towards Development
Teacher Reflections handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Amanda Ingram BSc, RSA DELTA, is the Director of Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

What kind of teacher are you and what kind of teacher would you like to become? This highly participative workshop offers the chance to explore these questions. We will consider our own teaching strengths, beliefs about important teaching qualities and see how our students’ expectations of us compare to our personal priorities for development.

Board Power
Board Power handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Rachel Bastow BA, RSA DELTA, CELTYL is Director of Studies and a CELTA Tutor at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

It’s the focal point of the classroom but how effectively do we use our board? Through a series of snapshots of real boards, we will look at ways to better organise the big blank space to provide a clearer record for students and harness the power of good boardwork. Save yourself 8,000€ and make your own board more interactive!

Creative Writing With Younger Learners
Creative writing With Younger Learners handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Andrea Littlewood BA, RSA DELTA is Head of Young Learners at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

This session looks at ways to encourage our younger learners to put pen to paper and produce language at more than sentence level. We will consider how to activate their interest by focussing on different types of writing such as stories, poems and newspaper articles (strange but true) and will get their ideas going with the help of music and visuals. The aim is to show the children that with motivation and support they can all become budding writers with work they can be proud of.

Carry On Conversation
Howard Giles BEd, RSA CELTA is a Senior Teacher at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

Conversation is something many students feel they need and yet how often have they “finished!” after a few minutes? We will need to look at some ideas for stimulating and sustaining conversation. We’ll try out some topic-based activities requiring minimal preparation. The focus will be on conversation classes but all the ideas are adaptable for General English classes.

Vocabulary Revision Activities To Go
Vocabulary Revision Activites To Go handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Silvie Rasikova RSA CELTA, IHCYL is an off-site school coordinator at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

Do you ever feel the need to revise all the useful vocabulary in your students’ coursebooks and have fun at the same time? In this seminar we will look at a variety of revision activities which will not only make your students remember those words but also enjoy themselves.

Lexical Approach: Evolution Not Revolution
A Lexical Approach handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Catherine Morley BA, RSA DELTA is a senior teacher and CELTA Tutor at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

Chunks, collocations, set phrases.... Are you interested in a lexical approach to language but confused about the terminology, or about how to incorporate it into your teaching? Even for teachers who are required to follow a grammar-based coursebook or syllabus, integrating elements of a lexical approach is still possible. This workshop aims to show you how, through a variety of activities and techniques you can put into practice in your classroom.

Practice Makes Perfect
Practice Makes Perfect handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Andrea Sweeney BA, RSA DELTA is Director of Studies at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

You can’t expect your students to give their best performance the first time. In this workshop, we will look at how task repetition can help students improve their language performance during speaking activities. After briefly considering the task cycle, we will look at practical classroom activities which encourage students and teachers to get the most out of their material.

Primary Pairwork
Primary Pairwork handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Andrea Littlewood BA, RSA DELTA is Head of Young Learners at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

This practical workshop considers how we can help children get the most out of pairwork activities. We will look at setting up and staging the tasks, building confidence, classroom management and setting realistic goals. Our aim is for teachers to come away with ideas which will encourage learners to speak by creating a real need to communicate.

Training Not Testing: Integrating Exams in the FCE Class
Training Not Testing handout TESOL 2008.pdf
Jacqueline Cook MA, RSA DTEFLA is a Senior Teacher and Public Exams Coordinator at Hyland Language Centre, Madrid

All of us as teachers want to make sure our students get good exam practice while, at the same time, learning and acquiring FC-level English. With this in mind, we will look at some practical ideas for integrating actual test material from past papers into a communicative, skills-integrated class that should be enjoyable and productive for everyone. Participation required.
